Our Research Themes and Current Programs

Water Resources & Environment

The Water Resources and Environment Research Theme of Science4Development advances fundamental and applied research to improve understanding of surface water, groundwater, and environmental processes critical to sustainable development in sub-Saharan Africa. The program focuses on hydrological, hydrogeological, and biogeochemical processes that control water availability, quality, ecosystem health, and climate resilience. By integrating field monitoring, modeling, and data-driven analysis, Science4Development supports improved water management, pollution mitigation, and climate adaptation while generating scientific evidence to inform policy, protect ecosystems, and strengthen environmental sustainability.

Soil & Agriculture

The Soil and Agriculture Research Theme focuses on advancing both basic and applied research to improve understanding of soil properties and processes that underpin sustainable agriculture and soil use in sub-Saharan Africa. The program focuses on soil physical, chemical, and biological dynamics that control crop productivity, water retention, carbon sequestration, nutrient cycling, engineering and other use. By integrating field experiments, monitoring, and data-driven analysis, Science4Development supports improved agricultural yields, climate-smart land management, and sustainable soil use while generating scientific knowledge that informs policy, farming practices, and long-term environmental resilience.

Sustainable Energy, Infrastructure and Public Health

The combined Sustainable Energy, Infrastructure and Public Health Research Theme of Science4Development advances interdisciplinary research at the nexus of energy systems, built infrastructure, and human health in sub-Saharan Africa. The program focuses on understanding how energy access, environmental conditions, and infrastructure design influence air quality, water safety, resilience, and public health outcomes. By integrating field measurements, engineering analysis, and data-driven approaches, Science4Development supports sustainable energy solutions, resilient infrastructure planning, and evidence-based interventions that improve health, reduce environmental risks, and promote inclusive, climate-resilient development.

Ongoing Research Programs

Our research programs are based in Sub-Saharan African countries

Soil, Water and Environmental Research in Crystalline Rock Regions of sub-Saharan Africa

Crystalline basement aquifers underlie large portions of sub-Saharan Africa and provide drinking water for hundreds of millions of people. Despite their importance, these aquifers remain among the least understood hydrogeologic systems globally, due to their heterogeneity, complex fracture networks, and strong coupling with climate and land use.

The Ibadan Hydrogeophysics Research Site (IHRS) represents a unique and strategically valuable field experimental research facility built to promote research that address these challenges.

Soil, Water and Environmental Research in Coastal Regions of sub-Saharan Africa

Coastal regions of sub-Saharan Africa, particularly the Niger-Delta, face compounding environmental crises including salinization of freshwater aquifers, flooding and land subsidence, soil degradation and contamination, and climate-driven extreme events.

Over 250 million people live in these coastal zones, yet long-term, high-resolution environmental monitoring and predictive science remain scarce. Our program hosted in Delta State, Nigeria establishes a research facility for coastal environmental science.
